I know it sounds vile, but...
Post I know it sounds vile, but...

...back in the late-80s/early-90s, I was a vegetarian (a rare breed back then, or so it seemed)and there was one dish that kept cropping up as the 'vegetarian option' and it was LUSH.

It was called 'Lentil Crumble.' I know it sounds gross, but it really wasn't. It had a normal crumble topping, and the lentil filling was a pale orange colour. It wasn't spicy, but it was very stodgy and comforting!

It could have been that the cook was just reheating a cheap frozen ready meal, but even so - I've not seen anything remotely similar anywhere!

Lentil Crumble definately beat the Nut Roast every time, (bleugh...Whose idea was THAT?!?!?).

Does this sound familar to anyone? Also, was anybody else stuggling with vegetarian school dinners in the 70s/80s?

Hmm, if it was the 90s then it could have been a 'bought in' special. But, if it has it's roots earlier than that we might have it. I shall check through the recipes and have a look.

There are quite a few vegetarian dishes in my collection, it's just I haven't had much time to put any new recipes in lately but bear with me.

Plus, if anyone else has any recipes, please add them to the site!

Cheers.

OK, the closest two recipes I have found are these:

http://www.schoolrecipes.co.uk/index.php/school-dinner-recipes/55-vegetarian-dishes/146-tilesse-pie.html

...and...

http://www.schoolrecipes.co.uk/index.php/school-dinner-recipes/55-vegetarian-dishes/147-nutty-vegetables-crumble.html

I'm guessing you could combine the crumble topping from the Crumble with the lentil filling from the Pie. Just an idea, but maybe worth a go?

Cheers.
